Shawnee Wollenman Johnson is a native Californian who paints with oils, waxes and acrylic media in an intuitive process that reaches into the subconscious to pull images from life, dreams and imagination.

She incorporates findings from nature and travels, repurposed materials, clays, sand, metals, natural pigments, Venetian plaster and old photographs into her paintings. Texture is often a strong element in her work. She works on paper, wood panel, hardboard and occasionally stretched canvas.

​

Shawnee's work references a life long awareness of the history of art and culture from cave paintings to the present, finding inspiration wherever she goes.

​

Shawnee has lived in Calistoga, California, with her husband, Jeff, since 1984.
